DC Trip Part 4... Washington DC, of course!

It was only 100 degrees out. What's the big deal? A day of sightseeing in the blaring District of Columbia sun was just another day in paradise.

It's a good thing I started the day with a hot beverage from Starbucks... that was silly.

We stopped off at Mount Vernon to grab some photos because the day before on our bike trip, we were in a little bit of a hurry.

We parked near Union Station. What a beautiful place!

DC's Metro system is pretty cool. It's very clean and fairly easy to use, once you get the hang of it.

I got some pretty cool moving train shots too. I've ridden Boston's T many times & never thought about taking a photo like this. I think DC's wall lights made it make sense.

This one is my favorite.

We got off the Metro and headed toward the Smithsonian Castle. This was before the earthquake that happened in Virginia a couple of weeks ago, but the Smithsonian Castle sustained quite a bit of damage during the earthquake. It was closed to visitors for a while. Not sure if it's open yet.

It's a pretty place. Look at these plants! They have some white leaves! That's not just sun reflection.

We headed down the mall toward the Roosevelt Memorial. On the way, we saw this sign for the Washington Monument. Good thing. We wouldn't have been able to find it otherwise.

Sarah tried to help us get around. She's the worst local ever. She doesn't know where anything is. Luckily, there was signage.

We saw the Jefferson Memorial on the way. It was kind of a long walk because it was so hot.

We made it to the Roosevelt Memorial. Such a beautiful place.

I took this really nice photo of S. We all had our hair up out of the way because it was so hot outside. We couldn't stay in the sun for any amount of time. So much sunscreen! It was so hot.

On the way back down the mall, we happened upon a gang of segway hooligans tearing down the mall. They could have taken someone's eye out! Also, it was really hot outside.

Thankfully we made it to the Museum of National History. We were in desperate need of air conditioning and lunch. The museum had both. We collapsed onto cafeteria chairs and fed our faces.

I had a gyro with lamb and tomato and lettuce and some kind of yogurty greek sauce.

We had a little time to explore the museum. We saw Julia Child's home kitchen!

And Dorothy's shoes!

After the museum, we finally got to our Harry Potter movie (which was the whole point of the trip to DC to visit S), and it was worth the wait.

After HP, we ended our girls' weekend with a dinner of turkey burgers & caprese salad and a viewing of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun starring Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker! It was amazingly 80's and fabulously bad. A perfect end to the weekend!

DC Trip Part 2--Biking the Potomac!

Saturday morning in DC, we decided to get some exercise. We headed into Alexandria to rent bikes and ride along the Potomac River. I wish we had something like this near where I live! The Mount Vernon Trail is an 18-mile long trail starting at Mount Vernon and going all the way into DC. We started in Alexandria and went all the way to Mount Vernon and back. And we only did half the trail!

How cool is the bike S got!?

Not a whole lot of other photos. I was busy wanting the bike ride to end! It was 100 degrees and we were dying! It was a wonderful way to spend the morning. I wish I could do that every Saturday!

Western Maryland

Sarah & Freddie Taylor got married in Western Maryland in April. "Western Maryland?" you say? "There's a Western Maryland?" Yes, loyal readers, there is. "What's there?" you may ask. Well... not a lot. But what is in Western Maryland is beautiful. We did a little exploring and found the original Washington Monument! Yup, apparently there are two. It was in a pretty little state park that is actually on the Appalachian Trail!

These huge old-fashioned lights illuminate it at night, I assume.

And here it is! Washington Monument, the first.

Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!

Al Roker brought good news this morning. It's going to be 43 degrees! Heat wave! This is my island in the sun! Woo-woo! It's time for dresses and spring jackets and...and... open-toed shoes!

Or... not.

Well, one good thing about a change in the weather is it makes for some gorgeous sunrises! This was the view outside my window as I watched Wake Up With Al this morning.

We have one lone icicle left. Hopefully he'll be gone by the time I get home. See ya, sucker!
